Trisha's still life- daisies

My 6 1/2 year old student Trisha did this painting. We went with a simple composition- a flower vase with a couple of different colored flowers. She designed where each flower would go and how big they would be. Initially, she wanted to do different kinds of flowers and the decided to keep the same kind but in various colors.
We then worked on pencil sketch first and then decided on the colors. She mixed her own colors and added depth by painting the petals with darker and lighter variations of the same color.
She did a great job and I love it!!

I absolutely love this painting done by my 6 year old student Harini! She loves dogs, so I decided to make her work on an acrylic painting of a dalmatian.
We started out by drawing the puppy on canvas. We broke down the shapes of the body into a simple structure by looking at a picture of a dog and then came back and refined it. She added all the details the way she wanted to.
When it came time to paint, Harini enjoyed picking the colors for the background and mixing it. The dog was white with grey dots and some basic shadows. She enjoyed mixing the greys and applying it all over.

Cool video about water problem

I saw this very cool video on vimeo.com. It talks about the problem of water shortage all over the world. But what i loved most about it was the creative artwork used to underline the problem. Take a look at the way the ink moves through the water! The artwork just emerges!!

Sister doodles!!

Also, my son is on a creeative spree....He's building a "cave" He's using all my rubber floor mats and has made a maze in his room. Of course I believe the main reason is to keep his brother out!

Check out this cool pen-and-ink artwork that my sister put together a couple of days ago. Beautiful don't you think? She loves making henna tattoo designs on the palm of the hand and this appears to me as an abstract henna tattoo. She lives in Chennai, India, my hometown, and is a writer.

I'm so lucky to be surrounded by such creative people:)

Varnish Sunday

How do you spend the better part of a Sunday? Varnishing your paintings of course! I was so thrilled to see all of my work out on the patio like this!! I never knew the magic of varnish until my friend Naomi told me about it....Now I'm a varnish addict!! Right, so I've decided to make more paintings in the abstract style of the two paintings from my previous post. I have a couple of ideas revolving around my head....one is a Buddha. I want to start the painting by making a skeletal outline of The Buddha and then filling it in. Lets see how that goes!

Now, getting back to my varnish, I use the Liquitex brand glossy kind. I picked it up the other day at Hobby Lobby and this small bottle has lasted me about 12 paintings- 2 coats each and I still have 1/4 left.

I was listening to my older son play the guitar all afternoon! Lovely lazy way to spend the day:)

Abstract Attack!!

Here are two of my newest artworks. As you can see, I have started to dabble in abstract art. I love the freedom that this medium offers! I have taken away the pressure of making my artwork look like something. instead I am enjoying the colors and the movement of the piece.
Both these paintings were done together. I feel that there is a very strong emotional feel to both of them.

Watercolor Leopard

My 11 year old student Anusha worked on this watercolor leopard. First, she chose a photograph from a selection of wild animals. Then she traced it to watercolor paper. The finished piece was a mirror image of the photograph. Then, we worked on changing the image's composition to her liking.

The next step was working on the background. I showed her to do a loose "wet on wet" watercolor technique to give a hazy, unfocused backdrop. Then she proceeded to add the colors to the body and the branch. Lastly, she painted on the spots on the leopard. She followed the natural curve of the body to add the spots and gradually worked on increasing the size and intensity of the color.

The result is right here! I am so proud of her, she did a great job. Keep it up Anusha!

Last weekend was so exciting with my paintings showing at the Venus envy show 2011! The exhibit was at Mad Art gallery in downtown. I met so many talented artists and saw very innovative and creative art.

South American yellow poison dart frog

Here is one of my son's watercolor paintings. He wanted to paint an animal and he picked out a picture he wanted to paint.I had just bought a new set of Winsor and Newton watercolor paints and wanted to test them out. I found a perfect volunteer!
He first lay down the initial daft with a pencil and I helped him with the proportions. Then we started on the background using the "wet on wet" watercolor method. He added these beautiful purple spots in with the blue! After this dried,He started on the grass. He used a more solid color for the stalks(He used more paint and less water.) As you can see, the tips were left lighter. I am teaching my students of the concept of subtle color changes within one area to add depth and make it more vibrant.
Then he painted the frog and added the details on its body.Lastly he wanted to outline it with a sharpie. I made him wait until all the paint was dry.
I had initially titled it "frog" He said, "No Ma! It's a South American yellow poison dart frog!!" He is the animal expert!!:)

Here is a still life acrylic painting one of my students made last week. I love the simplicity of the composition and the choice of colors. My student Anusha is in 5th grade. I had asked her to select any kids toy and use that as our still life. She decided to go with the pig. I helped her set it up and she took off from there!
We had a great time with this piece. The colors had to be just right, the shadows had to be blended in...she worked really hard and I am so proud of her:-)

This is what I'm working on right now. I am happy with the background and the composition, but I want to change some of the colors. I am in a winter mood now, but I just couldn't paint with whites! I had to put colors in and now it looks more like fall! Any comments/ideas/suggestions?

I am finally starting to figure out how to add new blogs and make this page work. I need to take some new pictures and start uploading them. Also, writing is relatively new to me- so I am feeling my way around. Hopefully it will get easier!
